Evacuation Procedures |
Front Door Evacuation
- Set parking brake, turn off engine and remove ignition key.
- Put bus in park with parking brake on.
- Notify BOE, put mike outside the window.
- Stand, open front door, face students, get their attention. Tell them, “Do exactly what I say – remain absolutely quiet”.
- Instruct students to leave all belongings (books, backpacks, etc.) on the bus.
- Turn face the front of the bus, standing between first row of occupied seats. Assign helper for outside the exit door, and an additional leader to escort the students a safe distance from the bus.
- Starting with right hand seat, tap the shoulder of the student nearest the aisle to indicate that those occupants should move out. Say, “WALK –DON’T RUN. Use the handrails”. At the same time, hold your hand in front of occupants in the left hand seat in a restraining gesture.
- When pupils in right hand seat have cleared the aisle dismiss the occupants in the left hand seat. Continue to alternate between right and left seat until the bus is empty.
- When the last seat is empty, walk to the front of the bus checking each seat to be sure all children are off the bus.
- Take emergency markers and student list with emergency numbers as you exit the bus. Set Markers.
- Join the students.
- Evaluate the drill with students, pointing out areas where improvement is needed and commending students on a well done activity.
Rear Door Evacuation
- Set parking brake, turn off engine and remove ignition key.
- Put bus in park with parking brake on.
- Notify BOE. Place mike outside window.
- Stand open front door (if possible), face students, get their attention and tell them, “Do exactly what I say – remain absolutely quiet”.
- Then say, “Rear door emergency evacuation drill - remain seated”.
- Instruct students to leave all belongings (books, backpacks, ect.) on the bus.
- Walk to the rear of the bus and face the rear door. Assign door helpers and leader for student exit.
- Use left hand to restrain students in right rear seat.
- Open emergency door.
- Face doorway and move between the left rear seats to clear the aisle.
- Command students in right rear seat to leave the bus. Have them assume a semi-squat position (or they may sit) as they jump from the bus. Instruct students to use the helpers shoulders as they jump or to grasp the helpers hand as the helper steadies them under the top of the arm. Caution them not to bump their heads.
- Tell the students in the left rear seat to leave the bus. Continue this process until the bus is empty. Keep control at the door to prevent any pushing or shoving. Students who are injured, disabled, or in a condition that could be aggravated by jumping out of the bus should not be required to participate in the drill. This student will remain on the bus and leave with you through the front door when the drill is complete.
- When last student has cleared the bus, walk to the front of the bus checking each seat to be sure all students have exited the bus. Take emergency markers and student list with all emergency numbers as you exit and join your students.
- Evaluate the drill with students, pointing out areas where improvement is needed and commending students on a well done activity.
Field Trip Evacuation Demonstration
- Be sure that all students have boarded and get their attention.
- Tell them, “Everyone is to be quiet and listen carefully to these instructions.” Any student that disrupts this presentation is to be sent back into the school. This safety presentation is a state mandate.
- Explain to the passengers that, “I am going to show you all of the emergency exits, even though we probably wont ever need them, some of you don’t ride a bus everyday and are not familiar with the emergency exits”.
- Start with the front door, side doors, rear doors, emergency windows, and roof hatch. Explain how to open each exit (remind them that they should never open at any other time). In the case of an emergency that you (the driver) will instruct the students (using the laminated emergency evacuation cards) on how to exit and which exit would be the safest.
